Black Liberation Book Read
Black Liberation Reading Group!
This space has been created for Black people to come together to read and build fellowship with others in the Hudson Valley. Grown from the Black Women Book Read, this reading group is open to Black people of all genders.
This session, we will be discussing Biomythography Bayou by Mel Michelle Lewis.
We will meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month starting from 6:30p - 8:00p
This book group may be different from others you have attended. We intentionally pull small sections of the book to read, because we are not just talking about the book. In our discussions we reflect on how what we are reading resonates with our life, how we feel connected to or in opposition to what we are reading, and how we feel we are further growing personally, and moving more towards liberation individually and as a people. We are building a community of people who share this desire to grow in this way together. Each participant is encouraged to bring to the room an excerpt that they would like to discuss, but it is not necessary.
Our friends at Rough Draft in Kingston have this book available/available to order, if you mention the book read, you will get a discount. If you are unable to purchase a book please email callie at mxcalliemackenzie[at]gmail.org and with notice we could purchase a book for you.
We will be meeting at 474 Broadway Kingston, NY at the new location of the UU Catskills. Please RSVP so we know how many people to expect

About the book:
Biomythography Bayou is more than just a book of memoir; it is a ritual for conjuring queer embodied knowledges and decolonial perspectives. Blending a rich gumbo of genres—from ingredients such as praise songs, folk tales, recipes, incantations, and invocations—it also includes a multimedia component, with “bayou tableau” images and audio recording links. Inspired by such writers as Audre Lorde, Zora Neale Hurston, and Octavia Butler, Mel Michelle Lewis draws from the well of her ancestors in order to chart a course toward healing Afrofutures. Showcasing the nature, folklore, dialect, foodways, music, and art of the Gulf’s coastal communities, Lewis finds poetic ways to celebrate their power and wisdom.

callie mackenzie
callie mackenzie (she/they) is a Kingston, NY based social change worker, musician and multidisciplinary artist. Living at the intersections of art & social justice, she uses the practice of creating art as medicine and works to create liberatory and joyful spaces for growth and healing rooted in love. Armed with a guitar, she brings the audience on a smooth, soulful and sometimes funky journey of deep feelings about oppression, freedom, love, heartbreak, and mental health. In a world that tells us that we need to be strong all the time, callie’s music and art is a revolutionary act: to show that we can slow down, feel our feelings, express our feelings, and feel joy.
Her second full length studio album entitled “what that heart do?” was released On April 14th,
“This album feels deeply personal, digging into belief systems, patterns, healing, love & heartbreak in a way that I haven’t done before. It’s rare for Black women to focus entirely on themselves, but I did. I learned so much about myself through creating this album, and have emerged a new person on the other side.” - callie mackenzie
Sug Daniels
Bio: Sug Daniels is a Delaware born, Philadelphia based, ukulele player, singer-songwriter, story teller, and producer and coach who is using the tools around her to capture the emotions of an era. Daniels’ work is as colorful, vulnerable, and charismatic as her personality. She thoughtfully combines elements of folk, rock, and soul alternatives to create personal and tender music interlaced with messages of truth and positive change.
Her single release with Don Giovanni Records "When I'm Gone" garnished well deserved attention from local and regional radio and venues and opened new paths. After years of touring with The Black Opry, playing official showcases in SXSW 2022, and supporting acts such as The Indigo Girls, Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Molly Tuttle, Adeem The Artist, Buffalo Nichols, Daniels released her debut studio album "I Believe In You" on September 23, 2025.

Lexxie Mathis
Bio: Lexxie Mathis is a bassist and composer currently based in Wilmington, DE after spending the past five years studying and working in Brooklyn, NY. While she loves laying down funky grooves, touring, and recording in the studio, her solo work embarks on an ambient and electronica journey—bringing the bass to the forefront through harmonics, chordal ideas, and melodic, airy, textures that often make it sing like a synthesizer. Drawing inspiration from composers like Brian Eno, C418, and Aphex Twin, Lexxie creates immersive soundscapes that bridge the organic and the electronic. You can find her performing in gardens, yoga studios, or intimate venues—crafting dreamy, emotive sounds that are meant to be felt as much as heard.
Her latest release,The Edge of Forever, is her most personal work to date—an ambient tape about transformation, longing, and ultimately, coming back home to yourself.
