callie mackenzie & Shamsi Ruhe

singer-songwriters callie mackenzie & Shamsi Ruhe will be in Kingston, NY at Rough Draft Bar & BOoks on August 15th 6PM.

Shamsi Ruhe is a Black, female queer person who dances with severe mental illness and sings folk, pop, and country. Her rich and powerful voice moves listeners deeply. Shamsi was signed to Mercury Records in younger years and subsequently signed by Chris Blackwell to Island Records. Her current work is in close community. It is a gift when she takes the stage to share her wisdom through story in song. Shamsi Ruhe writes and sings much of her own material. She has worked with Grammy award winning producers Paul Kolderie (Pixies, Warren Zevon, The Go-Go’s, Hole, Radiohead), Dean Jones (Dog On Fleas and The Felice Brothers), and Paul Ebersold (3 Doors Down, Sister Hazel). She also wrote and recorded with a team composed of Grammy nominated producer Rick Chertoff and Eric Bazilian, and Rob Hyman of The Hooters at Rykodisc.

callie mackenzie (she/they) is a Kingston, NY based social change worker, musician and multidisciplinary artist. Living at the intersections of art & social justice, she uses the practice of creating art as medicine and works to create liberatory and joyful spaces for growth and healing rooted in love. Armed with a guitar and using a looper to build layered guitar, percussion, and vocal harmonies she brings the audience on a smooth, soulful and sometimes funky journey of deep feelings about oppression, freedom, love, heartbreak, and mental health.  In a world that tells us that we need to be strong all the time, callie’s music and art is a revolutionary act: to show that we can slow down, feel our feelings, express our feelings, and feel joy.

Attica Remembrance Day

Summer is here, and it is time to prepare for our 5th annual Attica Community Remembrance Day in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Saturday, September 14th! This year’s theme is The Global Plague of the Power of the Naked Fist!

This theme is carefully chosen to echo the enduring struggle against systemic oppression. As we assemble, we will pay homage to the indomitable spirit of the Attica uprising, a watershed moment in the fight for justice, while simultaneously confronting the enduring injustices that afflict communities worldwide. Our gathering is not merely an act of passive remembrance but a defiant stance against the relentless grip of oppressive forces that continue to asphyxiate the marginalized and disenfranchised. The Attica uprising serves as a poignant reminder of the power of collective resistance—a resolute rejection of dehumanization and state-sanctioned violence.

Join us in community as we celebrate and remember the prisoners of the Attica Uprising!

The event will consist of:

  • Free Food (Vegan and Gluten-Free options are available and limited)

  • Free Performances presented by Lady Mae Entertainment and Callie Mackenzie

  • Ways to get involved with local organizations across the Hudson Valley

  • Speeches from Movement leaders

  • Free Healing Clinic

  • Free educational resources inspired and created by currently incarcerated community members

Red Fox Ravine Grand Opening

Celebrate the opening of Red Fox Ravine, a public ecological preserve and community space in the Wilbur neighborhood of Kingston. There will be musical performances by local bands, a plant walk through the preserve, a mushroom harvest, kids activities, a ribbon cutting ceremony and food/cold drinks!

FREEQUENCY--Hip hop and soul collective made up of Kingston locals who have captivated the Hudson Valley (including at last year’s Kingston Land Trust Fall Fest) with their words, beats, style, and heart.

Pulso de Barro--Local band exploring folkloric music that will make you dance with members with familial connections to the land and people of Mexico (Veracruz), Venezuela, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Lebanon, and the Rondout Valley! If you know the KLT, the conguero will be a familiar face.

Callie Mackenzie--a Kingston-based musician, multidisciplinary artist, and organizer who, armed with a guitar, brings the audience on a smooth, soulful and sometimes funky journey of deep feelings about oppression, freedom, love, heartbreak, and mental health.

Matthew O’Neill--A local band whose music combines elements of folk, rock, and world music to create a unique sound with lyrics that touch on themes of environmentalism, social justice, personal transformation, and celebrating the dynamic relationship between Mother Earth and all Creation, rooted in Indigenous ways. Their music invites listeners to reflect on their connection to the natural world and consider how they can play a role in protecting it. Matthew is also a member of the KLT Land Stewardship Team.

Plant walk: KLT Land Steward Shanique Aladden will introduce us to plants as we walk through the preserve. The calcareous terrain is home to some unique plants such as the purple cliffbrake fern, wild oregano, maidenhair spleenwort, and wild ginger.

Community shiitake harvest and cookout: We will harvest shiitake mushrooms from the community log yard that was established by Luke and Kaya, with help from community volunteers, as part of their Eat More Mushrooms Project and cook them on the campfire!

PLEASE PURCHASE A SLIDING SCALE TICKET FOR THE GRAND OPENING.
PARKING IS LIMITED AT THE PRESERVE SO TICKETS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND and we ask attendees to carpool with friends as they are able!

All proceeds support our fundraising campaign to build more trails and improve trail accessibility at the preserve.

THE STORY OF RED FOX RAVINE

This land, centered around a historic limestone quarry, experienced a second period of intense disturbance five years ago. The KLT protected the first parcel of the preserve just after this, in early 2020, and we have since been working hard, inspired by the resilience of the land itself and with the support of the community, to protect additional land to expand the preserve (in collaboration with the Northeastern Cave Conservancy), and to clean up, revegetate, and make public access improvements at what has already become a treasured local park. [Performances will be taking place on a stage built by our land stewardship team in 2023, the quarry is being stewarded by us and the community, new art, revegetaing etc.etc]
